Got Questions?
Starting therapy can feel like a big step and you will probably have lots of questions. Please feel free to email me directly if you want to ask anything specific.

The first few sessions will focus on understanding your difficulties and identifying your goals for therapy. Together, we will develop a shared understanding of why you have come to therapy and agree on a treatment plan. You are in charge of what you discuss in therapy. You do not have to discuss anything you do not want to. Research shows that a good relationship with your therapist is an important predictor of improvement. My aim is to create a safe environment in which you feel feel able to be open and honest and in which positive change can take place.

The first stage in treatment with a Clinical Psychologist is formulation. A formulation is underpinned by psychological theories and provides a working understanding of why your difficulties have developed, what triggers them and what keeps them going. People often find this phase very helpful as it gives meaning and understanding to difficulties that often feel overwhelming. Formulation is very important as it helps us to understand which types of therapy may be most beneficial and which problems to work on first. Decisions about which therapies will be offered are also informed by professional best practice guidelines, ensuring that you receive those therapies for which there is the best scientific evidence of effectiveness. If I feel that you would benefit from a psychological treatment I am not able to offer, we will discuss this and explore your options together.

Formulation and treatment is always completed collaboratively, with client and psychologist working together. This is because therapy is not something a psychologist ‘does to’ a client. Depending on your needs, sessions may involve learning new coping strategies, processing difficult experiences, or working to change longstanding patterns that are keeping you stuck. Therapy requires commitment and can sometimes feel challenging. We will work collaboratively throughout and always proceed at a pace that feels manageable for you. You may be asked to complete assignments and practice skills out with sessions. This means that the benefits gained and new skills learnt can continue to be effective after treatment has ended.
